Bike Patrol

In May of 1998, the Department of Public Safety’s “Bike Patrol" was put into action.  The patrol, which operates on a 24-hour basis from March to November, uses a specially designed policing bicycle with 24 gears, a necessity for a campus made of steep hills.  Not only does the bike patrol make Public Safety more visible on campus, but it also encourages interaction between the campus community and Public Safety.

Patroling the campus by bicycle, Public Safety is able to respond to situations in a timely and practical manner, reinforcing their commitment to the safety of the Holy Cross community.  The bike patrol helps Public Safety cover more campus ground in less time, creating a safer environment.  Additionally, Public Safety has become a stronger force on campus.  Students frequently see officers around campus on their bikes and are aware that the campus is being patrolled and monitored carefully.

Public Safety requires all officers to attend the C.O.B.W.E.B. ("Cops on Bikes with Education for Bicyclists") training program; a three-day course instructing officers in everything from Massachusetts bicycle laws to aggressive riding techniques. Public Safety currently has six (6) officers who have completed the training program.
