From
the time I was a little girl growing up in Cuba, I always
dreamed of being a teacher. In various capacities at Holy
Cross for twenty-nine years, I feel that my dream has been
more than fulfilled by teaching, advising, and guiding students.
My various titles at Holy Cross make each of my days exciting
and challenging!
---First,
as a member of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department,
I teach Spanish and continue to do research in Spanish Language
pedagogy and Latin American Literature. A literary reader I have co-authored, Vistas y voces
latinas, published by Prentice Hall, is in its third edition.
---As Class
Dean, I have been rewarded by guiding the Classes of 2002 and 2006 towards successful academic careers. Now, I have the pleasure of working with my present class, the Class of 2010, as they prepare to begin their junior year and achieve their academic potential.
---With
special responsibilities for ALANA (African American, Asian
American, Latino, and Native American) and international students,
I have the pleasure of interacting with students of diverse
backgrounds. While maintaining my Cuban roots, I am constantly
enriched by my friendships and work with these students. In
this capacity, I advocate for ALANA and international students
and help guide them towards special opportunities, programs,
and resources. Every year, my office hosts several receptions
and dinners, including the Welcome Weekend ALANA and International
Reception, the Family Weekend Brunch, the Baccalaureate ALANA
Banquet, and others, as well as co-sponsors various programs
of the ALANA organizations. One of my great pleasures is directing
the Odyssey Program, the one-week orientation program for
first-year ALANA and international students.
---Lastly,
I also hold the title of International Scholar and Student
Advisor. In this capacity as the Colleges resource person
in immigration and cross-cultural issues, I advise students,
faculty, and visiting scholars.
As I
spend each day at Holy Cross, I continue to live my dream
of teaching and advising students. And each day my life is
further enriched as I reach out to our students.
