ALANA Newsflash is an occasional electronic newsletter
for Holy Cross students of African, Latin American, Asian, and
Native American (ALANA) heritage. It is published
by Academic Services & Learning Resources, which thanks everyone

Opportunities
Now being made available in
the Career Planning Center is the Guidebook to ALANA Internships.
The Career Planning Center has compiled a listing of valuable, paid
summer internship opportunities, in a variety of career fields.
Students are encouraged to visit the Career Planning Center in
Hogan 203 so that they may review this hardcopy resource. Many
of the deadlines are soon approaching so don't wait!
The Plant Genome Research Program
(PGRP) is sponsoring summer internships at Cornell University
and the Boyce Thompson Institute. Internships are 8-10 weeks
in length in one of 16 participating labs currently doing plant
genome research. Interns will be mentored by a graduate student
or post-doctoral associate and will work with their mentors on a
project related to plant genomics. For participation in the program,
student interns will be provided a stipend, housing, and some travel
expenses. Applications are due on Feb. 23 and can be downloaded
at the website of http://outreach-pgrp.cornell.edu/
The NALEO Educational Fund and Shell
Oil Company are sponsoring the Shell Legislative Internship Program
which provides promising Latino college students from across the
country the opportunity to gain a strong background in policy, and
a sense of civic responsibility while growing academically, professionally
and personally. The Shell Legislative Internship Program is designed
to provide participants with a "behind the scenes" look
at how policy is developed and implemented at all levels of government.
Program requirements include being residents of (but need not attend
college in) the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado,
Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, New York or Texas. Also being a current
/ rising juniors / seniors or recent graduates of an accredited
four-year institution, demonstrating leadership potential and possessing
a sense of commitment to the Latino community. Application packets

The program deadline is March 12, 2004. A previous program
member was Cassie Flowers of the Admissions Department. For
more information regarding the Shell Legislative Internship Program,

The Florida State University College of Law is
sponsoring the Summer for Undergraduates Program. The four-week
program is designed to acquaint underrepresented groups in the legal
profession with the study of law and to encourage them to think
about law a possible career choice. This year's program will be
offered to sixty students and will run from May 24- June 18,
2004. Room and board is paid for by the College of Law and each
student participant receives a $500 stipend. The application
deadline is April 2, 2004. To download an application, you may

The Passport Program
is now accepting applications for
5 Pathfinder positions for this summer (July 28 - August 21).
Applications can be received from Tamika Weaver-Hightower in Smith
202 or via email. Applications are due March 1, 2004.
The Odyssey
Program is also looking for Residence Counselors
from August 20 - 27 and August 28 -31 (Fall Orientation).

The Mentoring Program
is accepting applications for 8 - 10 new Peer Mentors. Applications
may be picked up from Tamika Weaver-Hightower in Smith 202 or via
email. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2004.

Events
The Music that Moves Me Closer to God featuring
Dejongh K. Wells, Office of Residence Life and Meghan Frazier '06
on Wednesday, February 18 from 12noon to 1pm in Rehm Library.
A light lunch will be provided prior to the program.
The Counseling Center is offering a workshop entitled
"Staying Connected: ALANA Support" as a monthly
drop-in group for ALANA students to share their experiences of transitioning
to the Holy Cross environment. The goal is to maintain connections
with each other and the community through ongoing support and dialogue.
The first meeting of the semester is on Monday, February 23 from
5p to 6p in Hogan 215. For more information, you may call x3363

Scholarship
News
The Legal Defense Fund is sponsoring the Earl Warren Legal
Training Program Inc. Earl Warren Civil Rights Training Scholarships
are awarded each year to 15-20 new students whose community involvement
activities and leadership qualities demonstrate outstanding potential
for training as civil rights and public interest attorneys. These
awards are limited to U.S. citizens and preference is given to students
who are entering their first year of full-time study in law school.
The scholarships are in the amount of $3,000. They are renewable
provided funds are available and the student remains in good standing
and fulfills all Program requirements. Applications are not available
on-line but may be requested from a program sponsor via e-mail at
mbagley@naacpldf.org and
by writing to: The Earl Warren Legal Training Program, Inc.; 99 Hudson
Street, Suite1600; New York, NY 10013. The
deadline for requesting an application is February 15, 2004.
The Spectrum Initiative is sponsoring a scholarship as a one-time
reward paid directly to the recipient in the amount of $5,000. It
is targeted for minority students who are considering or are currently
pursuing a master's degree in library studies. Recipients must be
permanent residents of the United States or Canada. The scholarship
application process open annually in September, with applications
due to the association's scholarship clearinghouse by March 1, 2004.
