ALANA Newsflash is an occasional electronic newsletter
for Holy Cross students of African, Latin American, Asian, and
Native American (ALANA) heritage. It is published
by Academic Services & Learning Resources, which thanks everyone
who contributed announcements to this issue.

Greetings from the Black Student Union:
Black
History Month is fast approaching and we are excited about
the events and programs planned for the month of February. The
BSU has worked very hard to bring a variety of things to our campus
in recognition of Black History Month of both an academic and
social nature such as the Black & Gold Fashion Show for which
tickets are on sale this week.
We would like to issue a special invitation to you
to attend a lecture by our keynote speaker, *Talib Kweli, a
popular lyricist and social commenter, Wednesday, February 2nd*.

internships that are listed in it have early spring deadlines,
so for those students who are interested in applying should head

Villa, was the first multi-racial camp in the country committed
to creating multi-cultural understanding and promoting issues
around social justice in our communities. Hidden Villa is now
reaching out to all people from diverse cultural and economic
backgrounds who are motivated to affect positive change in children's
lives and teach respect for others and the environment. People
of color are especially encouraged to apply. Counselor salaries
start at $2350 for a 10-week summer. There are also positions
available for Program Heads, whose salaries start at $3025 for
11 weeks. You can earn more for greater experience, being multilingual,

Scholarship
News
The
Ad Club Foundation is awarding scholarships to minority students
who are majoring in Advertising/Marketing/Communications or a
related field, and seek to pursue a career in this area. Scholarships
will be awarded to students who show a high in potential, demonstrate
a commitment to the field, and have a strong academic record.
Financial need will also be considered as secondary criteria.
The funds from the Scholarship will go towards the student's tuition
for the 2005-2006 academic year. This Scholarship amount will
be $5000 per recipient. This can
be allocated completely to the Fall semester or split between
the Fall and Spring semesters. Checks will be made out to the
school. Once The Ad Club Foundation receives all applications,
a committee of industry professionals will review the applications
and select recipients. The recipients will be honored at the Arnold
Z. Rosoff achievements in diversity in our industry. Included
with the application, applicants should include the following
materials:
- A current resume
- Two letters of recommendation from a faculty memeber, advisor,
counselor, or employer
- An official transcript
- Answer to essay questions listed on the application
The application deadline is Friday, Feb
11, 2005. All materials must be received on
or before this date. Students must be
available to accept the Scholarship at our awards luncheon on
March 21, 2005. All interested students should stop
by the Academic Services Office in Smith 214 to pick up an application.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) was established
in 1978 by members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as a non-profit,
non-partisan educationsal organization dedicated to developing
the next generation of Latino leaders. CHCI's educational services
are designed to provide Latino students with the tools and resources
they need to succeed in attaining a higher education. Its leadership
development programs seek to help participants search for and
understand their identity as professionals, Latinos, and leaders.
By bringing together educated individuals who share a commitment
to serve their communities, CHCI endeavors to make its vision
of an educated and civic-minded Latino community a reality. The
CHCI is now accepting applications to their scholarship program,
Fellowship Program, and Summer Intership Program. Deadlines for
the programs are as follows:
Scholarship Program: application must be postmarked before April
15, 2005
Fellowship Program: application packet must be postmarked before
March 1, 2005
All interested students should stop by the Academic Services Office
at Smith 214 for an application and additional info for any of
the above mentioned programs.

3rd New England Latino Student Leadership Conference
The
College of the Holy Cross and the Latin American Student Organization,
along with NASPA Region I, are pleased to announce information
for the Third Annual New England Latino Student Leadership Conference
that will take place Feb. 18th and 19th, 2005. This conference
intends to bring together the top student leaders from across
New England to engage in dialogue around important Latino issues
and to provide a forum for students, faculty, staff, and community
members to connect and develop lasting relationships. Registration

The 8th Annual ALANA Town Meeting sponsored
by the Bishop Healy Committee.
Saturday,
Feb 12th, 2005.
PLACE: Suite A, B, and C Hogan
TIME: Delicious luncheon from noon to 1pm. Town meeting from 1pm
to 2:30pm
PURPOSE: To share ideas which, if adopted, will make Holy Cross
an even better college. You can be sure that the suggestions made
will be thoughtfully reviewed by the Administration. Each discussion
group of ten will have a facilitator and a note taker. All those
attending as well as Administrators will receive a compendium
of the ideas expressed. Take advantage of the opportunity of having
your suggestions heard and considered.
INVITATIONS: All ALANA students are invited. Each of you can bring
a "majority" guest.
The RSVP deadline has just been extended to Tuesday,
Feb 8, 2005. Call Mr. Joe Reilly, x3581 with your name and that
of your guest!

Law-Prep
Program for the Summer
If you have an interest in a career in law, it is never too early
to start learning more about law school. The Florida State University
College of Law's Summer for Undergraduates Program provides a
great opportunity for you to begin exploring the profession. For
the past 13 years, the FSU College of Law has sponsored a special
summer program that is designed for freshmen, sophomores, and
juniors who are interested in learning more about law school and
the legal profession. Our Summer for Undergraduates Program offers
substantive classes taught by College of Law professors, law school
admissions sessions including LSAT preparation, and guest lectures
and presentations about the variety of careers available in the
legal field. This year, 60 students will be accepted to participate
in the College of Law's Summer for Undergraduates Program. This
is an intensive 4-week program, and upon completion, participates
will have a good sense of what law school is like. More importantly,
participates may learn how to prepare better for law school during
their remaining years in college. The program will take place
from May 23 through June 17, 2005. No tuition is charged for this
program. Florida State University College of Law pays for room
and board in residence hall accommodations, and in addition pays
$500 stipend to each participate. The program is sponsered in
part by the Law School Admission Council. Please
note the application deadline is March 25,
2005. Participants will be notified by mid-April.
