'51 William A. “Bill” Loughlin writes that he is a contributor to The Truth Will Set You Free (Paulist Press), by Sister Margherita Marchione—scheduled for release this fall in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pope Pius XII. Class Chair Albert J. McEvoy Jr.

'52 Pierce Atwood LLP, a commercial law practice, headquartered in Portland, Maine, announced in April that the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling recently in the case New Jersey v. Delaware, “confirming, with modifications, the rulings and decree recommended by the court-appointed Special Master Ralph I. Lancaster Jr.”—who serves as of counsel in the firm; according to the press release, the ruling, in a 6-2 vote, held that “Delaware has the authority to deny British Petroleum permission to construct a proposed LNG terminal from the New Jersey shore out into the Delaware River.” Appointed special master in the case in January 2006, Lancaster issued his report in April 2007; the court heard arguments last November and issued its decision on March 31. '54 Rev. George L. O’Brien writes that, since retirement, he has been assisting at St. Pius X Parish in South Yarmouth, Mass., and, also, serving on the advisory board for establishing the layout of the new Pope John Paul II High School, which opened last September in Hyannis, Mass. Rev. John A. Roach announces his retirement this June as the pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Shelburne Falls, Mass., where he has served since 1996—and notes that he is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, which took place on May 24, 1958. '55 Robert P. Nirschl, M.D., writes that he has been appointed to the board of trustees of Marymount University in Arlington, Va.; he adds that he is founding director of the orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship program at the Nirschl Orthopaedic Center and Virginia Hospital Center, both in Arlington—and, also, at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. '57 Rev. Thomas J. Quinn, S.J., writes that he has resumed full-time ministry at the Mount Manresa Jesuit Retreat House on Staten Island, N.Y., after having recently completed a five-month sabbatical—which included an extended tour of Australia, where he also gave retreats—as well as visits to Ireland, England and Israel. Robert A. Scher, M.D., notes that he is now a member of the board of trustees of the Medical Society of the State of New York and the chair of its Health Care Delivery Task Force. Gauthier writes that he is retired, having taught French language and literature for 37 years—the most recent 30 years at Hiram (Ohio) College; Gauthier notes that the French government named him a “Chevalier dans L’Ordre des Palmes Académiques,” for his work in “fostering the study of French culture.” Robert J. “Bob” Martin and Mary E. '60 William H. “Bill” Anslow writes that he is senior adviser to the secretary general of the United Arab Emirates University in Al-Ain. Lawrence J. DeNardis, New Haven University president emeritus and distinguished professor of political science, announces that he has been elected chairman of the Institute for New Democracies (IND), a nongovernmental organization in Washington, D.C.; the announcement notes that DeNardis has taken part, for the past several years, in several short-term overseas missions, sponsored by the State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development and IND. ’61 Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, announced in February the selection of Robert E. Bessette, M.D., as the recipient of its Physician of the Year Award for 2007; a member of the hospital staff since 1972, Bessette serves as chair of the infectious disease division of the Fallon Clinic, also in Worcester. '62 Rev. John E. Crean writes that, on Jan. 6, he began working at a new parish—St. John’s Episcopal Church—in Ionia, Mich. James P. Hennessy Jr., retired staff psychologist at the Boston College Counseling Center, writes that he is currently working with at-risk high school students and gang-intervention programs in New England, through the Amer-I-Can Program, founded by former NFL player Jim Brown. '65 R. Jay Dewey writes that he has recently been appointed associate head of school for faculty and curriculum at The Field School in Washington, D.C. The National Center for State Courts, headquartered in Williamsburg, Va., announced in February the selection of Robert A. Mulligan, chief justice for administration and management of the Massachusetts Trial Court, as the recipient of its 2008 Distinguished Service Award; according to the press release, the annual award honors an individual “who has made longstanding contributions to improving the justice system and who has supported the mission of the National Center.” Timothy J. “Tim” Murtaugh, who writes that he retired this past January, notes that his career included 26 years with Allstate Insurance, seven years in the Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League organization as a player and six years as a manager. '66 Ronald J. Ferreri writes that, as the director of development for the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), he spent almost two weeks in December accompanying JRS/USA national director, Rev. Kenneth Gavin, S.J., on visits to sites the organization helped to rebuild after the tsunami struck in 2004. Richard T. Sullivan, a member of the faculty at the Boston University School of Management since 2004, notes that he is currently serving a three-year term on the Finance Committee for the town of Natick, Mass.; Sullivan adds that he recently completed his term as president of the Knox Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America. '69 David R. Croughan, M.D., writes that he has retired, following 30 years of private practice in pediatrics. Dennis J. White, a partner in the Boston office of the law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP, writes that he has been elected vice chairman of the board of directors of the Association for Corporate Growth—a professional organization focused on corporate growth and development and mergers and acquisitions; White notes that he concentrates his practice on “mergers and acquisitions, private and public offerings of debt and equity, senior debt financings and corporate governance counseling.” Class Co-Chairs David H. '71 James J. “Jim” Brosnan writes that he retired in August 2007 as a colonel in the Army Reserve, following 36 years with the 804th Medical Brigade and 3rd Medical Command—including a tour in Kuwait and Iraq. Brosnan notes that he currently serves as the superintendent of the Northern Berkshire Vocational Regional School District in North Adams, Mass. James M. Freedman writes that he has recently been promoted to vice president, leadership development, at Fresenius Medical Care North America, an international provider of dialysis products and services. '72 Thomas S. Carey writes that, in February, he was named tennis director at the Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford, Conn.; he adds that he became a United States Tennis Association high performance coach in 2007, after having completed the necessary requirements in the spring. Kenneth J. Marra writes that he accepted a new position in government service as deputy director, recruiting directorate, at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, Calif.; according to Marra, he is responsible for “the recruiting, motivation and qualification of candidates for Navy SEAL training.” Class Co-Chairs Allan F. '73 Barry J. Barresi, O.D., who has served as the president of the New England Eye Institute for the past seven years, writes that, in January, he was named the executive director of the American Optometric Association; he is also vice president of clinical affairs at the New England College of Optometry. Noting that his 30-year optometric career included service as a practitioner, clinical teacher, lecturer, academic administrator, business and health care executive, he had previously been the vice president and dean of academic affairs at SUNY-State College of Optometry, and founding director of the school’s Center for Vision Care Policy. Peter F. Hedglon  notes that, last November, he was elected to a two-year term as mayor of the city of Oneida, N.Y. Thomas P. Marshall Jr. writes that, on March 6, he was promoted to vice president-commercial lending, at Skylands Community Bank; he notes that he began a second career in banking in June 2004, following 25 years in telecommunications equipment sales. David P. Matthews notes that he received his M.B.A. in May 2007, from the University of New Hampshire, Durham. William M. “Bill” Murphy writes that he and his wife, Sharon, were selected for induction, this past April, into the Washington DC Hall of Fame, for their work in civic/community development. '74 Gary R. Edgerton writes that he received the first-place 2008 John G. Cawelti Award of the American Culture Association, for Outstanding Scholarly Inquiry into American Cultural Studies, for his book The Columbia History of American Television (New York: Columbia University Press, 2007). Edgerton serves as chair of the communication and theatre arts department at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Stephen R.
