Wireless Use Policy

Definitions:

Information Technology (IT) Resources - The computer equipment and facilities that comprise the College network and all electronic information and communication contained on the network.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) - The dynamic allocation of IP addresses to computers on the network.

Network Address Translation (NAT) - The conversion of private, internal IP addresses to Internet-addressable numbers. Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) - A segment of a communications network that enables security access controls and enhances performance.

Wireless Access Point (WAP) Device - A transmitter that communicates with wireless-enabled devices (See wireless_specs).

Policy Statement

The College provides and supports wireless connectivity in designated locations on campus; no other wireless access points are allowed on these sites (see wireless_services for list of currently wired areas on campus). If there is no College wireless service, individuals may set up their own wireless access points on campus. NAT and DHCP services must conform to ITS specifications (http://www.holycross.edu/its/its_policies/) and that the wireless zone is made part of the College's access-restricted Wireless VLAN.

Students must register with ITS prior to installation of any wireless access point device (contact the Help Desk). The student will be responsible for proper configuration of the device and will be held accountable for any problems resulting from connections through the wireless access point. NAT and DHCP services must be disabled.

Violations of this policy may be subject to disciplinary actions (see http://www.holycross.edu/its/it_policies/it_use_policy/). Requests for exemptions to this policy should be sent to the Director of Information Technology Services.

CAUTION: Wireless transmissions increase the possibility of data theft. Use at your own risk.
