Network (Novell) Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I save my documents?
You should save your documents to your personal drive (P Drive). Any files saved to your personal drive are backed up nightly and can be restored if necessary.
What is my "P" drive?
You P drive is your personal network drive. You are the only person who is able to access your P drive. Your P drive is accessible from any campus computer as long as you are logged into Novell.
What is a Department common drive?
Every department has a shared network drive. Only the members of that department have access to the drive by logging into Novell. This is also backed up nightly and can be restored if necessary.
How do I log into a computer other than my own?
To log into a computer other than the one in your office, you need to type your entire Novell context. This is an example of a Novell context: .jsmith.engl.fenwick.hc If you are unfamiliar with your context, please contact the Help Desk.
How can I install a network printer?
To install a network printer:
Double Click Network Neighborhood on your desktop. Double Click HC; Double Click HC again; Pick the building in which the printer is located. Find the correct printer and double click on it. When the computer prompts you to install printers, click Yes.
When I leave for the day should I leave my computer on?
You should always restart your computer at the end of the day. This will prevent anyone from accessing your Novell network drives.
What is my Novell Application Launcher?
Your application launcher (NAL) is software that you have been granted access to. You only have access to this software while you are logged into Novell.
Can I access my network drives from off campus?
Novell has a tool in BETA which we have been testing on-campus. Some faculty and staff have been using the WebDav tool with good results. If you would like to try this tool please see the instructions on setting up the WebDav tool. This tool is available to faculty and staff only.
Why do I get a message saying I have 3 grace logins?
This message will appear the day your Novell password expires. For faculty and staff, passwords expire every 60 days. For students, passwords expire every 150 days. You have 3 grace logins because your Novell password needs to be changed, so the grace logins are reminders that you do need to change that password or you will be locked out of logging into your account.
I deleted a file from the network that I did not mean to. Can I get it back?
To Salvage Network Files:
You must be logged into Novell. Double click on My Computer and find the network drive that the file was saved on. Right Click on that drive; left click on Salvage Files; Look for the file in that list and Click salvage.
Can I change my Novell password via windows?
To reset a Novell Password:
Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel. Click on the passwords icon and then click "change other passwords".
From the next screen highlight Novell Netware and click change; Enter in your old password and press tab; Enter in your new password (must be at least 8 characters and nothing previously used) and press tab; Type in your new password again and click OK.
I have to type in my username each time Novell starts. Can it be set so my name always loads?
When you have to change the username each time you log on:
Right click on network neighborhood on your desktop; left click on properties. Highlight Novell Netware Client and click on properties beneath it. Click the Location profiles tab and then highlight default. Click properties; Click properties again in the next window. There should be a check mark next to save profile on exit.
