Instructions for Set Up & Service of Computers Purchased at College Bookstore

Congratulations on your computer purchase: This document is aimed at giving instructions for setting up your computer, plugging it into the network jack in your room, logging on to the network, and calling the appropriate person if there are problems.

Setting up your computer: The Dell computers come with a brochure explaining how to connect the various cords and devices. The connectors are color coded, so be careful to match up the colors. Most connectors will only fit in the proper slot. Keyboards and mice can get mixed up, so take care with those.

Plugging into the network jack: You were given a network cable with your computer. That is the connection from the network card in your computer to the network jack in your room. There are two network jacks in each residence hall room. They are the jacks with the purple plastic. The one phone jack is not purple.

Desktop computers: Plug one end of the network cable in the network jack, the other in the network port on the back of the computer system. Note: you also have a modem installed. The cable will not fit into the modem port. Another way to distinguish between the network port and the modem port is that the modem actually has two ports side-by-side, so that you can have a phone connected at the same time. This should only be needed when you are home.

Laptop computers: Laptops come with a network card. Follow the instructions with the network card for installation. Still, the network cable should connect the network card to the wall jack.

You should power on the computer after you are connected to the network. If the computer was already started, restart it so that it recognizes the connection.

If you are living in a triple and have 3 computers in your room, call the ITS Help Desk, X-3548, and say that you have 3 computers in your room. If you have a triple, but less than 3 computers, you are all set. There are 2 lines in each room.

What to do with the boxes! If you want to keep the boxes for repacking the computer at the end of the school year, please send them home with whoever brought you to campus. If you do not want to keep the boxes, please break them down and stack them by the dumpster behind the residence hall. You might want to consider saving the box for the printer, if you bought one, because it would be shipped back to Hewlett-Packard if it needs repair.

Logging on and using email: Please refer to the instructions included with your password envelope or handed out at the Gateway orientations. If on the web, browse to http://www.holycross.edu/departments/its/docs/gateway.htm for a copy of those instructions.

SERVICE: Who to contact

RCC 1st
If you have problems connecting to the network at any point during the school year, you should use another computer to contact, via email, your Resident Computer Consultant (RCC) and cc the Help Desk. You do not need to call the ITS Help Desk with questions about using the computer. If your RCC is unable to help fully, he or she will coordinate with the Help Desk and ITS staff.

DELL
If the RCC determines that the problem may be hardware related, you will be instructed to call the Dell Technical Support Line at 1-800-234-1490 and speak to a Dell technician (average service call lasts 20 – 25 minutes).
The Dell technician will determine the nature of the problem and, if necessary, dispatch a local service technician to fix or replace the defective part. Advise Dell to send a local service technician to the College Bookstore. Then, bring your computer to the Bookstore so the service person can pick it up to be fixed. The College Bookstore phone number is x3393 or email –Bookstore. When your computer is fixed, the Bookstore will call you to pick it up.
