Protect Yourself Online
Keep your personal information personal
Never post personal information such as: Social Security number, birth date, home or school address, phone numbers, financial information or schedule. Posting this information can make you vulnerable to stalkers, identity thieves, or scams.
Restrict your profile
If a website allows you to restrict your information, do so. This is another way to protect yourself against stalkers, identity thieves or scams.
Beware of what you post
This includes blog postings, pictures, and description of yourself in your profile. Anything that is posted on the internet is available to anyone with access to the internet. This includes fellow students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, potential employers and the police. Also once information is posted on the web, you no longer have control over it, even if you delete it. Someone could copy that information and use it for themselves or post it on their page. In addition, there are search sites (such as Google) that keep digital copies of web pages which means information you deleted months ago could still be accessed.
Know to whom you are speaking
The internet allows people to be anyone or anything that they would like. When conversing with someone you met on the internet be cautious about the information you give them.
If it’s too good to be true it probably isn’t true
Many phishing scams will create websites or send emails or instant messages trying to get your personal information (bank, credit card, social security number) with very enticing deals. Be careful when handing this information out. As for more information, such as a phone number, so you can check the “deal” out.
Do not update your personal information
There are phishing scams that will send you an email asking you to update or verify your information with a bank or company you may do business with. They will ask you to fill this information online, do not! Contact the company via phone to verify this.
