Education Department News

In collaboration with the Worcester Public Schools, the department received a $150,000 grant from the Masschusetts Department of Higher Education through the Improving Teacher Quality grant program. The goal of the grant is to strengthen teachers' ability to improve their students' mathematics skills, especially in contexts linked to science. A special focus of this project is on middle school STEM learning.  Pr. Danuta Bukatko is the principal investigator.

Pr. Beverly Bell, Director of the TEP, presented a round table at the annual meetings of the Association for Teacher Education in New Orleans in February, 2008. The title of her presentation was “The Role of Mentoring of Novice Teachers Learning to Teach in Post Apartheid South Africa.”

Pr. Ricardo Dobles was recently awarded a $1500 grant from the Massachusetts Campus Compact to teach his students how they might use service-learning in the classroom.

Pr. Ericka Fisher gave a presentation entitled "African Heritage and Latina Student Engagement." Her talk was part of the program of the meetings of the American Educational Research Association held in Chicago in April, 2007.
