SPSS Workshop
SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is a comprehensive and flexible statistical analysis and data management system. SPSS can take data from almost any type of file and use them to generate tabulated reports, statistical graphics, plots of distributions and trends, descriptive statistics, and complex statistical analyses. SPSS version 15 for Windows is currently available on the Holy Cross network, and provides a user interface that makes statistical analysis more intuitive for all levels of users. Simple menus and dialog box selections make it possible to perform complex analyses without typing a single line of command syntax (although a powerful SPSS command language can also be used, which provides some capabilities not available through the menus). The built-in SPSS Data Editor offers a simple and efficient spreadsheet-like utility for entering and browsing data. High-resolution, presentation-quality graphics can be created and edited. SPSS for Windows can read data files from a variety of file formats including Excel, Access, dBASE, and plain text (ASCII) files.
This one-week workshop will explore the basics of SPSS for Windows. Morning instructional sessions will examine the SPSS graphical interface, use of menus and command files, data entry and transformation, and production of output. Statistical topics will include basic descriptive statistics and data summaries, exploratory data analysis, hypothesis testing, and simple regression. More advanced topics may include multiple regression, classification, ordination, multidimensional scaling, and production of statistical maps using geographic information system (GIS) software. Afternoons sessions will be spent working on individual projects and/or working on a series of SPSS lab exercises.
