The "Mapping Margery Kempe" website displays the parishes, images, chapels, and liturgical furnishings that form the material backdrop to The Book of Margery Kempe. Building upon the East Anglia database created by Sarah Stanbury and Virginia Raguin of the College of the Holy Cross, this site introduces visitors to provincial England as Kempe would have seen it in the 15th century. A goal of this site is to document the parishes, public buildings, cathedrals, priories and anchorholds that Kempe knew and visited. The site is highly oriented towards visual imagination and visual engagement with parish space in England before the Reformation. |
