Dr. Amanda Luyster
431 Fenwick

Dr. Luyster has taught courses in Medieval, Ancient, and non-western areas of study (African, Asian, and Islamic). Her research focuses on images of narrative in later medieval France, England, Italy, and Islamic Spain. She is particularly interested in images and stories that cross borders: either between realms of meaning (sacred and secular) or across cultural, spatial, or religious boundaries.

Recent publications include a co-edited volume on "Sacred and Secular" in Christian, Islamic, and Buddhist art in the Middle Ages; journal essays have appeared in Medieval Encounters and Word & Image. A fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities has allowed her to further her progress on a book manuscript on painted word and painted image in wall-painting in the south of France. Other prestigious fellowships include the Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies, from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, and the Bourse Chateaubriand (awarded by the French government). She has also been awarded research grants from the Aga Khan Foundation and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.
