A Virtual Reality Tour Guide

To

The Virtual PIT

Before you Begin - FAQ's:

Do I need a passport?
Not exactly. This is an interactive tour of The PIT and was created using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Your browser must be able to view files with the extension *.wrl. There are a number of plug-ins available for free downloading and you can find information on a number of them at the National Institute of Standards and Technology VRML site.

Where does the tour begin?
Begin Here!
You will start your tour in the hall just before the main Pit entrance door. If you are familiar with the ground floor of O'Kane Hall, you will remember that the Dance Studio is in the corner of the building, nearest the road (it was a swimming pool at one time) and right next to it is the student computer lab. The PIT is diagonally down and across the hall from both. (Click on the red X at right to jump in!)

What is the itineray?
VRML enables the viewer to interact; that means you can actually move around the site under your own control by using the mouse or the arrow keys. However, I have placed at least 16 predetermined "Views" into the tour that you can access a number of ways with the browser. I suggest you first take this "tour" and at each view you can use the arrow keys to look left or right from that position, then move onto the next view. After you have completed a tour, you can then move around on your own.

Traveler's Advisory!!

The Vritual Pit file is about 510K in size and may take a bit of time to download; but once it does, you and your browser can do the rest. I also found that if you use the mouse to maneuver around you may get lost or can turn yourself upside down very easily. Just hit the restore button on the VRML browser control panel and you will go back to the last view.

Special bonus for frequent travelers?
Once you become familiar with the space, turn the "Collision Detection" ON. Then you can bump into the walls without getting hurt. It also will make it more realistic and interesting trying to go around the space and through some of the doors.

Where's the tour guide?
As you take the tour, I have placed Web Anchors around The PIT, mostly on doors, for information. These will provide a brief description of where you are in The Pit.

Please come back again?
The Theatre Department is very excited about the configuration of The NEW PIT. We hope you will enjoy the tour.
