The Caucasian Chalk Circle
by Bertolt Brecht

Directed by Edward Isser

A long time ago, a poor peasant girl named Grusha adopts an abandoned, hunted baby of noble birth and risks everything for him ~ love, happiness, even her life. Bertolt Brecht's most accessible and popular work, filled with songs, The Caucasian Chalk Circle examines the power of love over greed while exploring the contradictory axiom that it is a terrible temptation to do good in an evil world. Will Grusha be able to save the baby? Will she be able to s ave herself? What will happen when the baby's birth mother comes to reclaim her child? And most important, what constitutes justice in a corrupt society, and who is capable of delivering it? This play is that rare work of art that manages to be both entertaining and provocative.

Spring Awakening
by Frank Wedekind

Directed by Margarett Perry

Frank Wedekind's potent and affecting play is a chronicle of adolescence and sexual awakening in a society that suppresses information out of a need to preserve the moral order. Written in 1891, the play centers on society's hostility toward the power of sex. Wedekind challenged the moral code of the Victorian age, and over a century later we find ourselves still struggling with the same issues. As the religious right is threatened by the perceived decay of "family values," it works diligently to protect its children from societal permissiveness. Director Margarett Perry (Holy Cross '86) sets her production in modern America.
