The Theatre Department offers a major with a 12-course curriculum. The following courses are required: Theatre History 1, Basic Acting, Design & Technical Theatre, Voice in Acting, Shakespeare Through Performance, American Drama, Modern Drama or Theatre History 2,
and any dance course. Lab experience in Theatre Practicum is required for three semesters.
Depending on the student's interests in acting, directing, design, literature, history, film or dance, electives are chosen from among the following: Scene Study, Techniques of Mask Performance, Acting as a Political Experience, American Film, Acting for Audience, Film as Narrative, Selected American Artists, Political Theatre, Audition Techniques, Scene Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Directing, Performance Recital, Performance for Audinece, Playwriting, Ballet 1, 2, 3, 4, Modern Dance 1, 2, 3, 4, Contemporary Dance Repertory, Improvisation/Composition, and tutorials in production, film, dance, directing, or dramatic literature.
There are no courses designed exclusively for first year students or for advanced placement.
PLEASE NOTE: Some courses have prerequisites or require permission of the instructor.
Students who plan to major in theatre are advised to begin with the following courses during their first year: Basic Acting (recommended fall semester), Voice in Acting (recommended in spring), Dramatic Literature course (fall or spring), Theatre History 1 or 2 (fall or spring), Modern Dance or Improvisation/Composition.
Courses recommended for first year non-majors are: Basic Acting, Modern Dance, Theatre History 1 or 2, Ballet 1, Design & Technical Production, Modern Dance 1, Improvisation/Composition American Drama 1920 to Present.
