Daniel McCusker has taught dance at Holy Cross College since the fall of 1994. He maintains an active career as a choreographer. At Holy Cross he has collaborated with Lynn Kremer and Shirish Korde on the evening length Conquistadors and on the revival of their music/theater piece RASA.
Recent projects include Trail at Tufts University for the Dance Performance Ensemble; the site-specific Field Work, with visual artist Bob Rizzo, part of the twentieth anniversary celebration for the Newport based Island Moving Company; WIDE a dance/music collaboration with composer Chris Eastburn and a large inter-generational cast of dancers, singers and musicans and choreography for Dana Brayton's oratorio The Things They Carried, at the Boston Conservatory.
From 1985 to 1993 he was the artistic director of Ram Island Dance, a community based dance organization in Portland, ME. As artistic director he
developed a unique repertory highlighting historically significant dances and choreographers to create a context for viewing his work, and the work of other new choreographers. With the company he developed a program for teaching compostion and sourcing material to elementary and middle school students.
From 1977 to 1984 he danced with the Lucinda Childs Dance Company, performing extensively in Western Europe and the United States. In 1990 and 1991 he returned as a guest to the Childs Company for the revival of the Childs-Glass-Lewitt collaboration Dance in Lyon and at Lincoln Center in New York.
His choreographic work has been supprted by NYSCA and the National Endowment Choreography Fellowships Program, the Monk's Trust and the Dance Umbrella. His collaborative work with visual artist Katarina Weslien was supported by the Maine Arts Commission, the Payson Foundation, the Maine Festival and the Monks Trust. His work with Ram Island Dance was supported by the NEA, Maine Arts Commission, NEFA, and the UNUM Charitable Foundation.
He has made or set his own dances for a variety of regional dance companies, has choreographed for regional theater, and been a guest artist at many university dance and art programs. He has taught for the Harvard Summer Dance Program, ADF and Jacob's Pillow where he was guest choreographer for the Ballet Project.
Mr. McCusker trained in New York with Alfredo Corvino, studied modern technique at the Cunningham Studio and improvisation with Judy Padow. Modern classes with Gwyneth Jones, and contact improvisation workshops with Olivier Besson and Debra Bluth have had more recent impact on his dancing.
Mr. McCusker also teaches at Tufts University.
Daniel McCusker has a BA in Comparative Literature/Social Sciences from the College at Lincoln Center/Fordham.
