The College of the Holy Cross and the Departments of Music and Theatre, with support from the Henry Luce Foundation, announce a conference and festival, Continuities and Change: A Celebration of Balinese Music, Theatre, and Dance, November 21-23, 2003, at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Performers, scholars, and composers from Indonesia, Canada, and the United States will join together for this weekend of stimulating performances and scholarly presentations. The College's Luce Assistant Professor of Balinese Music, Theatre and Dance, Desak Made Suarti Laskmi, will be joined by Bali's celebrated national treasure, I Gusti Ngurah Windia, and other internationally renowned Balinese performing artists, many of whom are on faculty at the Indonesian National Academy of Performing Arts (STSI).

The three-day conference will feature several fascinating performances and concerts, academic papers and panels, performance workshops, and master classes. Keynote speakers for the event are international scholar and performer I Made Bandem and renowned composer and ethnomusicologist Michael Tenzer.

The conference will open with an exciting presentation of gong kebyar music and traditional Balinese dance by the eminent artists invited especially for the conference. Other performances will include topeng prembon, wayang kulit, and a featured concert of contemporary music by living composers who have been influenced by Balinese music.

CALL FOR SCORES: Composers are encouraged to submit up to three (3) scores for consideration. Pieces should evidence a clear link to Balinese music. Submissions require a score and/or sound recording, and should be sent to Shirish Korde, Conference Co-chair; 28 Hurlbut Street, No. 2, Cambridge, MA, 02138. Enclose a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope if you would like your submissions returned.

CALL FOR PAPERS: The committee is also seeking academic paper submissions, which must be limited to 20 minutes. Interested scholars, performers, and students should submit an abstract (maximum 500 words) to Lynn Kremer, Conference Co-Chair; 12 Allen Hill Road, Princeton, MA, 01541. In addition, we invite proposals for panels (60-90 minutes) and workshops (60 minutes). Proposals should include a brief description of the topic and contents of the presentation, panel participants, and note any audiovisual equipment required.

The deadline for all submissions is August 1, 2003.
