UNIVERSITÉ
DES SCIENCES HUMAINES: STRASBOURG II
Strasbourg, France
Location
and Facilities:
Strasbourg,
the capital of Alsace, is a river port and border town (the
heart of the old city is on an island at the junction of
the Bas-Rhin and the Rhine which separate France and Germany). The city
has been economically and politically important since Roman
times. Today, its identity is French, but the German language,
art, food and culture are everywhere evident. Its political
demeanor and its lively and cosmopolitan museums, theaters
and music, are those befitting the seat of the new European
Parliament.
Academic Program:
Founded in 1538, the Université de
Strasbourg is one of France's larger universities.
Holy Cross has an agreement of cooperation with the Faculté
des Sciences Humaines (Strasbourg II Marc Bloch) under whose roof
the traditional courses in the liberal arts may be pursued.
Especially qualified Political Science majors can obtain
permission to take certain courses at the prestigious
Robert Schuman Institute. In addition, the college has
partnered with the Centre
International d'Etudes de Langues (CIEL) in Strasbourg to provide
a language reinforcement program which focuses on oral
and written skills, and offers practical support in meeting
French academic conventions (types of university assignments
encountered; the forms of French written and oral exams;
note taking, etc.).
In addition to these 4 weeks of preparatory, intensive training in language and culture, students register for one course at
CIEL throughout the year to augment their language acquisition.
