Purpose
and scope of the project—The Independent Study Project
is an integral component of the Holy Cross Study Abroad experience.
It provides students with the opportunity to pursue some special
interest in the local culture, whether it be history, language,
folklore, religion, law, arts, economics, commerce, industry,
architecture, politics and government, women’s issues,
social institutions or practices, manners, cuisine, popular
culture or the scientific study of local flora and fauna.
Many of these interests may be pursued, of course, in regular
academic courses at the university, but the project supplies
an additional opportunity to move out of the classroom, out
of the library and into the community.
