UNIVERSITÉ DE BOURGOGNE
Dijon, France

Location & Facilities:
Dijon, the capital of the Côte d'Or (the heart of Burgundy wine-growing area) is but an hour and a half southeast of Paris by fast train (TGV). It is the political, business, cultural and academic center of one of France's most historic regions. The Dukes of Burgundy who ruled this fabled land from the twelfth to the fifteenth century endowed Dijon with treasures in art and architecture which have been carefully preserved, and bequeathed a tradition which continues to sustain all of the plastic and performing arts, the pursuit of learning, and the art of living--gastronomy. The secular Université de Dijon, founded in the early part of the eighteenth century took the name of l'Université de Bourgogne in 1985. It is medium sized (under 17,000 students) and includes all of the modern facultés including law, medicine, pharmacology, and business, economics graduate school, as well the traditional liberal arts.

Academic Program
Holy Cross has an agreement with the Faculté des Langues et Communication under whose auspices the traditional courses in the liberal arts may be pursued. The College has also contracted with language specialists to provide language support during the year. In addition, a non credit course and tutorials given by French Department faculty offer practical support in developing French academic conventions (types of university assignments encountered; the forms of French written and oral exams; note taking, etc.). Academic Calendar.

Course Load:
Three University courses and the required Holy Cross language and culture courses (totalling 14-16 credit hours) per semester are the equivalent of 8 Holy Cross courses.

Pre-University Language
Institute d'Etudes Françaises de Touraine in Tours

The Holy Cross program in Dijon includes a four-week  pre-university year intensive language and culture course at the Insititut de Touraine.  The Institut is located in Tours, the capital of Tourraine, in the  heart of the Loire valley. Excursions to several area cultural attractions are part of the program, and have
included visits to Vendôme, Poitiers, Mont Saint Michel, Chartres, and La Rochelle. For the month of September, students will live with families with whom they will share breakfast and an evening meal. Upon completion of the Tours sojourn, students are responsible for their own transportation to Dijon.

Special notes:
September Language Program courses will be recorded as 'overloads' and may not be used to make up a college deficiency.
