Beijing Institute of Education
Beijing, China

Location and Facilities
Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China and an ancient capital of six dynasties, is rich in history and culture. The dynamic economic growth and rapid social changes in China in the past decade gives the city an overwhelming sense of energy and optimism. At the same time, Beijing is also characterized by the "down-side" of development: pollution, traffic, and unending construction.  A semester of study in Beijing is an exciting way for Holy Cross students to learn about China as they strengthen their Chinese language skills.

Courses taken so far at CET Beijing for Holy Cross credit

The Academic Program:
The Holy Cross in China Program resides at the Beijing Institute of Education, a small college located in a bustling commerical
and residential neighborhood conveniently near bus and subway connections. The focus on language training at the Program, as well as the small size of the host college and the small number of English-speaking Westerners on campus, enables Holy Cross to provide a strong, language-immersion experience for our students.
Course Load:
The Holy Cross in China study abroad program is a one-semester Chinese language immersion program for students who have completed at least three semesters, and preferably five semesters, of college-level Mandarin Chinese.
The curriculum consists of approximately twenty hours of Chinese language classes each week which focus on the development of language skills and overall communicative competence.

Independent Cultural Immersion Project:
An important feature of the Holy Cross in China study abroad program is an ICIP through which students explore some aspect of Chinese society, history, economy, or culture. Students begin planning their project with a Holy Cross faculty member in the semester before they depart for China and in some cases may use their field experience as the basis of a more extensive research project pursued under the direction of a Holy Cross faculty member upon their return to campus.

Living Arrangements:
Students live in a dormitory on the campus of the Beijing Institute of Education. All Holy Cross students participate in the Chinese Roommate Program which allows them to interact with their Chinese peers in informal, comfortable settings. Meals may be purchased in the campus dining hall or at any of the dozens of restaurants or eateries around the campus. A stipend for meals is included in the enrollment fees.
