Elementary French 2
Le cours
I. Introduction
This course, which is taught exclusively during the Fall semester, is intended for students who have had previous instruction in French. It is designed to review most of the basic grammar and vocabulary taught at the introductory level while also helping students develop listening, reading, writing, speaking and writing skills. Upon completion of this course, students will possess the skills necessary to be successful at the Intermediate level.
Since this course is a review course, we will cover many grammatical and lexical topics briefly so that we can spend more time on more difficult structures and skill development. In order to facilitate this process, you will have access to several different computer-based programs that will help you evaluate your progress. It is important that you keep up with the material and notify your professor whenever you are having difficulty.
II. Required Materials.
Chez Nous: Branché sur le monde francophone. Textbook, Workbook and CD-ROM (Prentice-Hall, 2002)
III. Course requirements
Attendance & Participation: This course meets 5 days a week. Three days a week with your professor and two days a week with your Foreign Language Assistant in your practicum. All five hours are mandatory. In the classroom, students are expected to always speak in French. The use of English will not be tolerated. You will learn phrases, etc., that will help you communicate with your instructors when you are having difficulty understanding.
Examinations: This course is divided into 5 units. Each unit covers 1 or more chapters. The exams will test grammar and vocabulary acquisition as well as listening and reading comprehension. The last exam (#5) will also include a speaking component that will require you to meet individually with your professor.
In addition to the examinations, you will be evaluated on the following:
Workbook Assignments: Students will be expected to complete the exercises assigned in their workbook and turn them in before each unit test. The specific exercises/pages are listed on the course website.
Listening Activities: In addition to the lab manual that is part of your workbook assignment, we will be watching segments from the Chez Nous and French in Action video series in class. You will also be assigned a listening activity as homework in each unit.
Reading Activities: In addition to the short reading assignments in your textbook that we will occaisonally review in class, you will be assigned one reading passage as homework in each unit. These assignments may come from your textbook, workbook or another source.
Speaking Activities: Most class activities will give you opportunities to practice speaking French with your professor and your classmates. You will frequently be asked to complete activities in small groups so that you have more opportunities to speak in class. At the end of the semester, you will meet individually with your professor to have your speaking level evaluated as part of your last exam.
Writing Activities: You will be expected to submit one composition per unit. The topics are listed on the course website. The evaluation will be based on the following categories: Content/Ideas, Organization, Grammar, Vocabulary, Mechanics (spelling, punctuation, etc.)
Review Activities: The following computer-based tools are available for grammar and vocabulary review: Chez Nous CD-ROM, Chez Nous website, Pre-Tests.
Make-up work: Assignments that are turned in late will not be considered for full-credit. Exams will not be rescheduled without a written excuse from your Class Dean.
