Read: Willis, Learning to Labor

1. According to Willis, how does the rebellion of working class kids against authority in school prepare them for working class jobs?

2. What broader theoretical argument does Willis make about working class youths' resistance to capitalism? How does his analysis of resistance differ from those of Scott and Ong?

3. How does Willis' argument about the cultural reproduction of class compare to Oscar Lewis' idea of a "culture of poverty" (discussed in class on Monday 4/2)? How do culture and economic status relate to each other in his argument?

4. Ester Boserup argued that giving women access to education would be a way to improve their status by allowing them to obtain jobs in the "modern" sector of the economy. How would Willis respond to her argument?

5. What would Marx and Weber say about Willis's argument in Learning to Labor?
