Study Guide Questions for Readings
February 5 (M), February 7 (W), February 9 (F)
Hint for reading: While the entire book is assigned, you might want to focus your reading as follows:
Preface: Skim for context of research
Chapter 1, Chapter 2: Read
Chapter 3, Chapter 4: Skim for background on what has happened in Malaysia and the village Scott studied
Chapter 5, 6: Read
Chapter 7: Read very carefully; this is the crux of Scott's argument
Chapter 8: This is a dense theoretical chapter. Read only if you are interested in Marx or notions of hegemony
There are lots of footnotes throughout the book. Feel free to ignore them.
1. What does Scott mean by everyday forms of resistance? Why does Scott feel that these actions can rightly be called resistance? Do you agree with his argument?
2. What is the moral economy? How does the penetration of market forces affect it?
3. How does Scott's model of the moral economy relate to the other theories of peasant and household production which we have encountered (Engels, Chayanov, Sahlins)? To the arguments about human nature, needs, and desires?
