Study Guide Questions for Readings
January 17 (W), January 19 (F), January 22 (M), January 24 (W)

Read: Nash, "The Meaning and Scope of Economic Anthropology" (article)
Malinowski, "Kula" (article)
Polanyi, "The Economy as Instituted Process" (article)
Sahlins, "The Original Affluent Society" (article)

1. What, according to Nash, is the difference between economics and economic anthropology? How does he think the two fields should relate to each other?

2. What is the kula? Why does Malinowski claim that it is economic? Do you agree with his reasoning?

3. Why does Sahlins call hunting and gathering societies "affluent"? What does his argument suggest about economists' assumptions about homo economicus?

4. How do both Nash and Polanyi define the differences between formal and substantive economics? Why does Polanyi favor the substantive approach? Do you agree with his reasons?

5. Taken together, how do these four articles challenge economists' explanations for human behavior? Which arguments do you find most convincing? Why?

6. How would a substantivist analyze the kula, and what broader conclusions would s/he draw from this analysis? How about a formalist? How would they each respond to the other's arguments?
