Study Guide Questions for Readings
April 27 (M)
1. For Twitchell, the key question to ask about consumption is "Why are we so unwilling to acknowledge and explain what seems the central characteristic of modern life?" (281) What accounts for the bias against consumption and materialism, and why does Twitchell see consumption as generally positive and important? Do you find his arguments persuasive? How do they compare to other accounts of consumerism we have explored this semester?
2. What are simple living and voluntary simplicity? How do they represent transformations in consumption practices and attitudes? Do you find this lifestyle attractive or necessary? Why or why not?
3. What is Diderot's lesson? What are the concrete steps which Schor suggests we take to develop a new consumer consciousness and behavior? Do you think her suggestions would have the desired results? Why or why not?
4. What is affluenza? How are children in particular affected by it?
