1. What claims to expertise and authority are involved in cosmetologists' depictions of themselves as "hair doctors" or "gifted" stylists?

2. How is language connected to processes of being and becoming, in Jacobs-Huey's analysis? How does language relate to context, as in the salon, a religious meeting, or a stand-up comedy club?

3. What is at stake in African American women's hair-care decisions, practices, and discussions?

4. When is hair just hair? When is hair not just hair? Why?

5. How do the AFROAM-L debates about natural hairstyles compare to white feminist articulations of natural or authentic fashion?
