2008 Summer Research Opportunities

This summer, Holy Cross will run a summer research program that will fund a number summer student researchers and provide associated programming using funds from various institutional grants. The program is scheduled to run from May 27 - July 31, 2008. Students accepted into the program will be paid a stipend of $3200 for the 10 week period. In addition, each student will be provided room and board on campus and will be reimbursed up to $500 for supplies. Student participants will perform campus-based research under the direction of a Holy Cross faculty member. Any student who has not already graduated from Holy Cross by the beginning of this summer is eligible to apply. The five departments eligible for this research support are Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology (for projects with a natural science focus).

If you are interested in applying for this program, you need to do several things soon.

First, you need to talk with a Holy Cross professor who will be doing research this summer at the College about the possibility of your working with her or him. Many, but not all, of the faculty in these departments are willing to support research students this summer. In order to apply for a summer research fellowship, you will need a Holy Cross faculty sponsor with whom you will be doing your research. Thus it is important for you to approach faculty members with whom you are interested in working as soon as possible. You should find out what they are working on and develop a tentative research proposal.

Second, you need to send to the Science Coordinator at P.O. GR an application package consisting of a signed cover page, a written statement, and your most recent transcript (which you can obtain from the STAR program) and a room and board application. Your written statement should be two to three typed pages and should state: a.) why this program interests you, b.) your science background, c.) your summer research plan, and d.) your long-term goals (e.g. research plans while at Holy Cross, graduate school, medical school, etc.) Please comment on the prospect of your continuing independent research during the coming school year. The deadline for returning your completed application is Friday, February 22.

Third, you need to arrange to have two faculty members in the sciences supply a recommendation. Faculty will send the recommendation directly to P.O. GR also by February 22. One of the recommendations should be from the faculty member with whom you will be collaborating in your research.

Selection Process

The award is made to the student, so the primary mode of selection will be based on the application of individual student. Other factors will be considered, however. Factors (not necessarily in order of priority) that will weigh in the selection process include: academic record, faculty recommendations, plans after graduation, interest in the research project, whether participation in the research project will continue during the academic year, progress made during the previous summer (if applicable), the statement included with the application, and how many students have applied to work with a particular faculty member or within a particular department. Traditionally, this has been a competitive program, with more qualified applicants than can be funded.
