The ninth annual Leonard C. Sulski
Memorial Lecture in Mathematics will be given by Professor
Dennis DeTurck of the University of Pennsylvania at 8 p.m.
on Thursday, April 18, 2002, in room 519 of the Hogan Campus
Center. The title of the lecture is "Coiling and writhing
in geometry, biology and physics." The lecture series
is a tribute to Professor Sulski, who taught in the mathematics
department at Holy Cross from 1965 until his death in 1991.
Professor DeTurck is the chairman of the mathematics department
and Davidson Kennedy Professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
His research interests center on systems of partial differential
equations and differential geometry. He is currently managing
editor of the Contemporary Mathematics series of the American
Mathematical Society, and has served as associate editor
of the American Mathematical Monthly.
The lecture will be preceded by a dinner co-sponsored by
the department of mathematics and computer science and the
Mathematical Association of America at the Hogan Campus Center.
