More than 100 men and women visited the
Holy Cross campus on Nov. 10, 2001 to commemorate the 60th
anniversary of the NROTC Unit at Holy Cross. Organized by
the committee for the Joseph T. O'Callahan NROTC Fund, the
daylong celebration honored the 2,103 midshipmen who have
graduated from the program while also paying tribute to all
veterans from the College.
At the breakfast event, retired Lt. Gen. Bernard E. Trainor
'51, USMC, delivered the keynote speech. A three-star general
upon retirement, Trainor is a highly decorated officer who
has led troops in combat in Korea and Vietnam. William Dempsey
'63, O'Callahan committee chair, notes that Trainor, a much
sought after expert on the Middle East, addressed post-September
11 fears. "He is well versed in the politics of the
region," says Dempsey. "During his 20-minute speech,
you could hear the proverbial pin drop."
An open house at the NROTC unit in Carlin Hall was held
that afternoon. In the evening, a Navy and Marine Corps ball
and dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel capped off the day's
activities. "The committee was pleased with the response
and support of what we were trying to do," says Dempsey.
