Robert H. McCooey, of Rye, N.Y., and Sea Island, Ga., died Nov. 16, 2001,
at 71. Active in business affairs, Mr. McCooey began his career on Wall Street
as an independent broker and later served as a specialist at Henderson Brothers.
In 1988, he, with his sons and daughter, founded The Griswold Co., one of the
largest independent brokerage firms of the New York Stock Exchange. Mr. McCooey
had been a member of the stock exchange for 46 years.
His involvement in community service included serving on the board of Lincoln
Hall, Lincolndale, N.Y.; several hospitals in New York; the Weston Jesuit School
of Theology, Cambridge, Mass.; Morality in Media, New York City; and Graymoor,
Garrison, N.Y. He also served as chairman of the board of trustees of Iona
Preparatory School, New Rochelle, N.Y.; Catholic Big Brothers, in New York
City; Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; and Our Lady of Mercy Hospital Fund.
He was a past board member of the Boy Scouts of New York; the Cerebral Palsy
Association, Westchester, the Catholic Youth Organization; St. Agnes Hospital,
White Plains, N.Y.; College of New Rochelle; and AmeriCares, New Canaan, Conn.
In addition, Mr. McCooey had been active in several Catholic organizations,
including the Order of Malta; the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre; and the Cardinal's
Committee of the Laity of the Archdiocese of New York.
A Navy veteran, he served from 1952 to 1954 as a lieutenant junior grade.
Mr. McCooey had been a member of the President's Council at Holy Cross and
an admissions advisor.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine; five sons, including Robert H.
Jr. '87, Mark J. '89, and Timothy J. '91; a daughter, Mary C. '92; a daughter-in-law,
Kristina (Grimm) '89; two brothers; several brothers-in-law, including John
K. Figge '59, Thomas G. Grace '62, Timothy J. Joyce '69 and Thomas F. Egan
'71; four grandsons and a granddaughter. His brother was the late Herbert J. "Bert" '49.
His brother-in-law was the late Thomas P. Joyce '59 and his father-in-law was
the late John M. Joyce Jr., Honorary '79.
