Thomas P. Donovan, S.J., died Oct. 13 at the Campion Center, Weston, Mass., at
88. Prior to his retirement in 1991, Fr. Donovan had worked in local pastoral
ministry for many years and served as province director of the Apostleship of
Prayer, beginning in 1969.
Fr. Donovan entered the Society of Jesus in 1932. After
pursuing his studies at Shadowbrook in Lenox, Mass., and
at Weston (Mass.) College, he taught philosophy and English
at Boston College for two years; he then studied theology
at Weston for three years prior to his ordination in 1944.
Following a year of theological studies at Weston and a
year of advanced ascetical studies and pastoral work at Pomfret,
Conn., Fr. Donovan joined the Holy Cross faculty, teaching
English from 1946 to 1957. He then taught one year at Cheverus
High School in Portland, Maine, before returning to Boston
to join a group of Jesuits engaged in the ministry of preaching
and conducting parish missions.
Fr. Donovan is survived by several nephews.
