The Sept. 25 edition of The New York Times included an article about Joseph E.
Murray, M.D., in its Health & Fitness section, titled, "On Surgical Innovation
and the Questions It Can Raise." Murray, who shared the 1990 Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine for his work in the area of kidney transplants, is
the author of Surgery of the Soul: Reflections on a Curious Career.

J. Tracy Mehr was one of four professors honored during 2001 commencement exercises
at Amherst (Mass.) College, on the occasion of his retirement. Mehr, who served
on the Amherst physical education faculty for 35 years, coached seven sports
at the college during his tenure.

Joseph A. Califano is chairman and president of the National Center on Addiction
and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University in New York City. Noting
that CASA celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2002, the former U.S. Secretary
of Health, Education and Welfare and the organization's founder, describes
its purpose: "CASA is the only national organization that brings together,
under one roof, all the professional disciplines needed to study and combat
all types of substance abuse as they affect all aspects of society." Reflecting
on the agency's 10-year history, Califano highlights its accomplishments, which
include: the establishment of demonstration projects in 47 sites in 31 cities
and 20 states focused on children, families and schools; and assessment of
the effectiveness of drug and alcohol treatment, "monitoring 15,000 individuals,
more than 200 programs and five drug courts in 26 states." He adds that
CASA has published more than 40 reports and white papers (the most recent of
which is "So Help Me God: Substance Abuse, Religion and Spirituality")
and suggests consulting the agency's Web site at www.casaclumbia.org for more
information. Califano adds that, since its inception, several Holy Cross alums
have been employed by the organization, which has grown from a staff of three
to 74 professionals; in 2001, Marie E. Golden '02 worked at the agency through
the Holy Cross Summer Internship program.

James F. Gill Jr., who is a managing partner in the New York City law firm
of Robinson Silverman Pearce Aronsohn & Berman, has been named grand marshal
by the parade committee of the 2002 St. Patrick's Day Parade in Rockville Centre,
N.Y. In October, ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) notified Salvatore
J. Parlato Jr. that his handbook on teaching English as a Second Language,
ESL Lite, has been accepted for distribution; ERIC is a national clearinghouse
and database for materials on languages and linguistics. John A. Tierney was
selected as one of the recipients of the St. Thomas More Award, presented on
Dec. 9 during the fifth annual Red Mass of the Diocese of Fall River, Mass.,
at St. Mary Cathedral; Tierney has served as an associate justice of the Massachusetts
Superior Court since 1990.

The Radiological Society of North America recently presented Ernest J. Ferris,
M.D., with its gold medal, the society's highest honor, at its annual meeting
held in Chicago, Ill. Ferris, who has worked in the field of radiology for
more than 36 years, is professor and chairman at the University of Arkansas
for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Ark. Francis J. Larkin was selected as
the recipient of the first annual Judge Fox Award presented at the Catholic
Charities' Greater Boston Office's "Fabulous Fall Feast" fund-raiser
on Oct. 10.

Robert S. Burroughs, M.D., who retired after 30 years of private practice in
internal medicine, now works part time at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island
in Pawtucket. He received the "Irving Beck Memorial Award" this year
from the Rhode Island chapter of the American College of Physicians, in recognition
of excellence and peer approval in the specialty of internal medicine. The
U.S. Secretary of Education has appointed Lawrence J. DeNardis a member of
the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI).
DeNardis, who is president of the University of New Haven in Connecticut, is
also chairman of the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges; a member
of the Executive Committee of the American Council on Education; and the NCAA
Division II President's Council. In December, the Consumer Healthcare Products
Association (CHPA) announced that Robert G. Donovan has been named interim
president of the association effective Jan. 2; a member of the CHPA board since
1990, he served as chairman from 1994-95. Donovan currently heads his own consulting
firm and serves as president of the Council on Family Health. John H. "Jack" Flannagan,
a senior lobbyist for the Massachusetts Teachers Association, has been elected
president of the National Association of Legislative and Political Specialists
for Education (NALPSE) a national trade association consisting of government
relations specialists from the 50-state education associations affiliated with
the National Education Association (NEA). John M. Greaney is an associate justice
of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Daniel T. Harrington, M.D., continues
to practice medicine in Fall River, Mass. Rev. Donald M. Ward, S.J., is currently
teaching at a Jesuit school in Tanzania, East Africa.

to serve as rector of St. Paul's Parish in Grand Rapids. He is in his fourth
year teaching German as a visiting professor at Grand Valley State University
in Allendale, Mich. Robert G. Lian, a founding partner in the Worcester law
firm of Zarrow, Eynon & Shea, was selected to serve as co-chair of the Massachusetts
Bar Association seminar, "Recent Developments in Family Law," held
in Worcester in November. Lian is currently the treasurer of the Worcester
County Bar Foundation and vice president of the Legal Assistance Corporation
of Central Massachusetts.

of The Boston Globe included an article by David A Spina, titled "Freer

about media coverage of the "war on terrorism," titled "Coming
Together in an Age of 24/7." Matthews is the author of the recently published
book, Now, Let Me Tell You What I Really Think. The October issue of Urban
Land featured an interview with Joseph W. O'Connor who began serving a two-year
term as chairman of the Urban Land Institute in July. John T. "Jack" Schriver
III, who retired in June after more than 30 years with the Chicago, Ill., law
firm of McDermott, Will & Emery, has begun a new career as a partner in the
Chicago office of Duane Morris, a national law firm headquartered in Philadelphia,
Pa.

Monsignor Thomas J. Sullivan, who has been affirmed as a Prelate of Honor to
His Holiness by Pope John Paul II, now has the title of monsignor; he has served
as chancellor of the Diocese of Worcester since 1998 and as the diocesan director
of vocations since 1995.

Insurance Information Institute in New York City, was quoted in the Sept. 27
issue of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette article, titled "Catastrophe
will change insurance plans." After 10 months as interim executive director,
Michael C. Farrell has been offered the position of council administrator and
deputy executive directorfocusing on paid staff and revenue-producing
operationsfor the Seattle (Wash.) Council of the Society of St. Vincent
DePaul. In September, ImCloneSystems Inc., headquartered in New York, announced
that Michael J. Howerton has joined the company as vice president, business
development; his responsibilities include the development of new business opportunities
for the company, including acquisitions, product in-licensing and out-licensing,
and strategic alliances. Paul A. Laedlein, who retired last year after serving
more than 27 years of active duty in the Navy, recently accepted a civilian
position with the U.S. Navy headquarters in London, England. He is now a project
manager for logistic support of U.S. personnel assigned to remote NATO bases.
The Oct. 22 issue of the Hartford Business Journal included a Q & A with Joseph
J. MarcAurele, titled "Delivering 'big bank' products with a community
approach"; MarcAurele is the president and chief executive officer of
Citizens Bank of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Stanley W. "Bud" Stevens
currently serves as the vice president of human resources for Fidelity Investments
in Covington, Ky. In November, EMC Corp., Hopkinton, Mass., announced the promotion
of William J. "Bill" Teuber Jr. to executive vice president, in addition
to continuing in his current position as chief financial officer. Teuber's
responsibilities include managing the company's finance organization and overseeing
EMC's worldwide cost containment initiatives.

County Bar Association. Titled, "Developing and using Demonstrative Evidence

use; and methods of overcoming objections. McGuirl, a civil trial attorney
and principal of the law offices of Robert J. McGuirl, concentrates his practice

about James K. Haldeman, titled "Flyin' High." Haldeman, a captain
with American Airlines, was invited to take part in the tribute to the victims
of the Sept. 11 tragedy which took place during homecoming activities in the
fall at his alma mater, Spring-Ford High School, Royersford, Pa.; Haldeman,
who had played football in high school and college, was also invited to present
the ball at midfield for the football contest. The Acton (Mass.) Woman's Club
selected Thomas E. Moroney as the guest speaker at its Nov. 14 meeting. A columnist
for the MetroWest Daily News for 15 years, Moroney is a contributing reporter
and commentator for "Greater Boston with Emily Rooney," the nightly
public affairs show on WGBH-TV; he is also co-author of the recently published
book, Just Let Kids Play. Michael P. O'Toole is a research chemist with Bayer
Corp., Woodbridge, Conn.

as a psychotherapist at New Britain (Conn.) General Hospital Counselling Center,
Mary Lou Graham has begun studying at the Yale University School of Nursing
in New Haven. Harry K. Thomas Jr., senior foreign service officer, is the director
for South Asia at the National Security Council in Washington, D.C.
