Men's and Women's Track and Field

The Holy Cross men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2001-02 indoor track and field season at the Alden Invitational at Brown University. Both teams had some very good performances to open the year.

On the men's side, captain Andre Thibeault '02 (East Providence, R.I.) placed second in the weight throw with a personal best throw of 51'2.5". Dwayne Henclewood '04 (Jamaica) finished first in the shot put with a toss of 46'8.25" to lead a 1-2 Holy Cross finish. J.T. Gazzola '02 (Warwick, R.I.) placed second with a throw of 45'00.25". Joe Robertson '02 (Smithfield, R.I.) qualified for the New England Championships in the pole vault with a leap of 14'0", placing second overall.

Sean McCarthy '03 (Chelmsford, Mass) led the effort in the running events, placing fifth in the one mile run with a time of 4:22.75 while the Crusaders 4x800 meter relay team placed second with a time of 8:25.45.

McCarthy earned ECAC Track Athlete of the Week for his efforts the next weekend at the Harvard Invitational. McCarthy placed first in the 5,000 meter run with a personal best time of 14:55.89.

The women's team also had some great performances at Brown to open the indoor campaign. Captain Emily Hogan '02 (Northboro, Mass.) won the one mile run with a time of 5:22.16. In the 1,000 meter run, Julia Gillis '04 (Cornwall, N.Y.) placed third while teammate Christine Kearney '02 (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) placed fourth with a time of 3:10.38 and 3:16.53 respectively. Kathyrn Thornton '05 (Burbank, Calif.) placed first in the 3,000 meter run in 10:53.63.

Erin Mosely '05 (Carlisle, Mass.) became the first women's runner to qualify for the prestigious New England Championships. She qualified in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:23.68.

Both teams will have full indoor schedules to prepare for the championship run at the end of February and into the beginning of March. If these opening performances are any indication, this season could be very successful for the Crusaders come championship time.
