Swimming and Diving
Both men's and women's swimming and diving teams are off
to a good start. After losing at Colgate in the season opener,
the men's team has won two straight meets against Springfield
and Providence while the women's team defeated Springfield,
Siena and Providence.
The Crusader men fell to the Raiders, 143-98, up in Hamilton,
N.Y. Mike Emmons '03 (Middleboro, Mass.) continues to be
the team's outstanding performer, placing first in 1000-freestyle,
and 200-butterfly. Scott Rimm '04 (Potomac, Md.) and Steve
Finocchi '02 (North Attleboro, Mass.) also won their individual
events, the 200- and 50-meter freestyle races respectively
against Colgate.
The Crusaders then returned home to battle Providence and
won 11 of 13 events to defeat the Friars, 131-85. Emmons
once again led the team, winning three individual events
(1000-freestyle, 200-IM and 200-backstroke). Holy Cross then
took its show on the road, again travelling to Kingston,
R.I., for the Harold Anderson Quad Meet. The Crusaders finished
second overall behind host, Rhode Island, with 114 points.
Holy Cross captured the gold in 12-of-19 events in the meet.
The women's team also began the year falling to Colgate,
158-83, before defeating Springfield, 123-120. The Crusaders
won five events and finished second in seven events in picking
up their first win of the season.
Holy Cross then hosted Siena at the Hart Center and defeated
the Saints, 169-131. Maura Malone '02 (Shaker Heights, Ohio)
and Laura Brennan '04 (Eglin AFB, Fla.) led the team, winning
two individual events a piece and helping two relay teams
(200-medley and 400- meter freestyle) to finish first. Kim
Rinaldi '02 (West Boylston, Mass.) won both the one- and
three-meter diving events.
The Crusaders then knocked off Providence, 140-103, to run
their winning streak to three straight meets. Brennan once
again led the team, winning two individual events, while
Rinaldi won both the diving events. Holy Cross then continued
on the road, joining the men's team at the Harold Anderson
Quad Meet. The women finished in third place behind both
Rhode Island and Providence. Holy Cross next saw its three-meet
winning streak snapped at West Point as it fell to Army,
165.5-120.5.
After returning from winter break, both teams will have
five meets to prepare themselves for the Patriot League Championships
on Feb. 14-16 at Navy.
