The December issue of Art in America noted that the philanthropist and friend of Holy Cross, Iris Cantor, was recently presented with the Legion of Honor by the French government. Artist Alain Kirili and Metropolitan Museum curator Gary Tinterow were also recipients of the country's highest award.

The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery, donated by the Cantors and located in O'Kane Hall, opened in October 1983, with the inaugural exhibition, "Auguste Rodin 1840-1917." Over the years the Cantors have donated and loaned numerous works of art to the College, including "Hand of Christ," a sculpture by Enzo Plazzotta, displayed on the steps of Dinand Library, and the 7-foot monumental figure of Eustache de St. Pierre, by Rodin, located at the entrance of the gallery.
