1951

Paul M. Bennett  
Jan. 30, 1999  
In Maine Medical Center, Portland, at 69. Mr. Bennett had worked 22 years as a store manager with the W.T. Grant Co. and 20 years as a property manager with the Bowdoin Corp. of Portland. From 1951 to 1953, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Joan; three daughters, including Nicolyn B. Keville '83; two sisters; and four grandchildren. 

David H. Kiernan  
March 7, 1999  
At his home in Longboat Key, Fla., at 69. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Kiernan had served as vice president of the Wall Street Group, a public relations firm in New York City and ITT's Continental Baking Co. At the start of his career, he worked in radio, joining WNHC-AM radio, New Haven, Conn., in 1952. He anchored newscasts for WNHC-TV in 1958 and then joined ITT Corp. in New York City in 1962, where he worked for 23 years, becoming the firm's director of public relations. Mr. Kearnan is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons; three daughters; a brother, W. Jerome '58; and six grandchildren.

James T. Murray  
March 11, 1999  
In Florida, at 85. Retired Col. James T. Murray, USAF, had served in the Air Force for 28 years. A veteran of World War II, he had been a bomber pilot and a prisoner of war for 13 months. Mr. Murray had served as commander of the ROTC program at Holy Cross. After retiring from the Air Force, he moved to Orlando, Fla., where he taught in private and public schools for about 20 years. Mr. Murray is survived by three sons; a brother; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

Edward F.S. Deignan  
March 29, 1999  
At the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, at 65. Prior to his retirement in 1994, Mr. Deignan had been principal of The Deignan Company, a Concord, Mass., real estate firm he founded in 1973. Previously, he was employed by the Joseph F. Deignan Real Estate and Insurance Company in Belmont and Concord. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Deignan served at Hanscom Air Field, Bedford, and in Saudi Arabia. He is survived by his wife, Ann; two sons; two daughters; two brothers; a sister; and five grandchildren.

Raymond H. Giguere  
Feb. 3, 1999  
At his home in Northboro, Mass., at 64. Mr. Giguere had been a partner in the Worcester law firm of Shumway Giguere Fox Aloise & Wilcox for 30 years. A Navy veteran, he served as first lieutenant in the Korean War. Mr. Giguere is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons; and four grandchildren. 

Joseph L. McWilliams  
Dec. 25, 1998 
At Caritas Norwood (Mass.) Hospital, at 63. Mr. McWilliams had been the owner and president of Accu-Rate Products of Foxboro, Mass. He served as a radio operator in the Armor Division of the U.S. Army for two years and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. McWilliams is survived by two sons; three daughters; his mother; two sisters; and three grandchildren. 

Thomas J. Rappel  
Dec. 29, 1998  
In Glenbrook Hospital, Glenville, Ill., at 64. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Rappel had worked for Bell & Howell for more than 30 years. Following graduation, he joined the company as a trainee in sales. During his career, he became vice president of the company's international division, moving to Japan for five years in the 1970s to become chairman of Bell & Howell Japan. Mr. Rappel is survived by his wife, Jeanne; a son; two daughters; a brother; a sister; and two grandchildren. 

Rev. William H. FitzGerald
April 19, 1999
Rev. William H. FitzGerald, S.J., 81, a long-time member of the classics department at Holy Cross, died April 19 in the Campion Center, Weston, Mass. Entering the Society of Jesus, Lenox, Mass., in 1938, Fr. FitzGerald completed the four-year ascetical and classical curriculum there and then pursued studies in philosophy at Weston College. Prior to his ordination in 1951, Fr. FitzGerald earned a master's degree in classics from Fordham University in New York City and studied theology at Weston College. Following his ordination, he did advanced ascetical and pastoral work in Pomfret, Conn., from 1952 to 1953, and earned a Ph.D. in classics from Fordham in 1957.

Fr. FitzGerald had been a member of the classics department at Holy Cross from 1967 until 1988, serving as a professor and also as department chair, from 1977 to 1980 and 1981 until 1988; he then became assistant director of the Classics Library. Named professor emeritus in 1992, he continued to assist the department until retiring to Campion Center in 1998.

Earlier in his career, Fr. FitzGerald taught at Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine, from 1945 to 1947; after earning his doctorate in 1957, he taught Greek and Latin at Weston College and served in the classics department of Shadowbrook, in Lenox, Mass., for 10 years.

Fr. FitzGerald is survived by two sisters.

Thomas J. O'Malley Jr.  
Dec. 29, 1998  
In Washington, D.C., of a heart attack. Mr. O'Malley, 62, served as special counsel in the enforcement operations office of the U.S. Department of Justice's criminal division since 1985. In 1972, he joined the Department of Justice in New York as a trial lawyer in its Office of Drug Abuse Law Enforcement. Transferring to Washington, D.C., in 1974, he served as deputy and then, acting chief, of the department's narcotics and dangerous drugs section. At the beginning of his career, Mr. O'Malley taught elementary school in New York's Spanish Harlem and worked 10 years as an assistant district attorney in the Bronx, N.Y. He is survived by a sister.

Shaun E. Condon  
March 14, 1999  
At his home in Easton, Mass., at 62. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Condon had taught business education at Brockton (Mass.) High School for more than 32 years. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; a son; and a daughter.

James T. Higgins  
Feb. 27, 1999  
In Carney Hospital, Dorchester, Mass., at 61. Prior to his retirement in 1997, Mr. Higgins taught accounting for 29 years at West Roxbury (Mass.) High School; he had previously taught at Roslindale High School. Before beginning his teaching career, Mr. Higgins had worked as an accountant with General Electric. He served in the Army National Guard from 1959 until 1965. Mr. Higgins had been a Holy Cross class agent. He is survived by a sister; two brothers, including George A. '62; and two nephews and four nieces. 

1960  

James H. Roche Jr.  
March 6, 1999  
At Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, Mass., at 60. Mr. Roche had been a history professor at Holyoke (Mass.) Community College for 30 years. During the summer, he had been a park ranger at the Cape Cod National Seashore since 1969. Mr. Roche served in the Marine Corps from 1960 to 1962. He is survived by his wife, Nora; three sons; two daughters; and his mother.

Stephen G. Clark III  
Feb. 12, 1999  
In Sisters Hospital, Buffalo, N.Y., at 51. Mr. Clark had been an industrial electrical products salesman in the Buffalo area for General Electric Supply. During the summer, he operated the Cape Restaurant in Cape Vincent, N.Y. At the start of his career, he taught history and coached football at Notre Dame High School in Utica, N.Y. While at Holy Cross, he played defensive tackle on the football team for four years. Mr. Clark is survived by two sons; his mother; and a sister. 

John B. Murray  
Jan. 20, 1999  
At his home in Springfield, Mass., at 51. Mr. Murray had worked for the Postal Service for 22 years. A Vietnam War veteran, he served with the Special Forces 75th Infantry Airborne Rangers in South Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. A member of an elite long-range reconnaissance and search-and-destroy unit in Chu Lia, he took part in more than 75 combat missions. Mr. Murray was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, a Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal and an Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service. He is survived by his father, Martin B., M.D., '33; three brothers, including James A. '72 and Francis D., M.D., '80; and two sisters. 

1971 

Thomas J. Milewski  
Feb. 8, 1999  
In New Jersey, at the Medical Center at Princeton. Mr. Milewski, 49, joined Greater Media in 1973 as program director and morning air personality. He later became executive vice president and chief operating officer and the president of the company's radio group. Mr. Milewski served on the boards of both the National Association of Broadcasting and the Radio Advertising Bureau and took part in community efforts in support of the Montgomery Township school system. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; a son; a daughter; his father; and a brother and sister.

Marco C. Barbarisi  
Nov. 19, 1998  
At Shands Hospital, Gainesville, Fla., at 38. Mr. Barabarisi had been an electronics engineer at the Naval Coastal Systems Center, Panama City, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Sheila; a stepson; a stepdaughter; his mother and father, Charles F., M.D., '52; and a sister and brother.

Susan R. Thomson  
Feb. 22, 1999  
At the Palliative Care Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, at 35. Ms. Thomson, a certified public accountant, was vice president and residential controller at the General Investment and Development Co. in Boston. She is survived by her parents; her paternal grandmother; her maternal grandparents; and a sister.

Francis J. Belanger  
April 6, 1999  
At his home in New Hampshire, at 26. Mr. Belanger had been an accounts representative at Fidelity Investments, Boston, for four years. He played football at Holy Cross and was a member of the 1991 Patriot League Championship team. Mr. Belanger is survived by his parents; seven brothers; three sisters; and nephews and nieces.
