- A front page article in the April 1 issue of the Wall
Street Journal described Holy Cross' relationship
with All Hallows High School in the Bronx.
- April brought the news of Professor Bruce I. Miller's
discovery of a long lost Gilbert and Sullivan ballad from H.M.S.
Pinafore. Miller, a member of the College's music department,
and a British colleague made the find and created big news.
They were featured in the New York Times, the Boston
Globe, the Associated Press, U.S. News and
World Report, the BBC and London's
Daily Telegraph, among others.
- The May issue of the magazine George offered
an article about Newsweek reporter Michael Isikoff and
his new book about President Bill Clinton. Holy Cross philosophy
Professor Joe Lawrence is quoted, giving an assessment
of his college friend Isikoff.
- On May 4, the popular Channel 5 (Boston) news magazine
program, Chronicle, featured a behind-the-scenes
look at the Abraham Lincoln life masks housed in the Dinand
Library. Librarian Jim Hogan provided Chronicle co-host,
Mary Richardson, with a tour of the library and its many
special collections.
- Thomas T. "Todd" Mydler, M.D., '83, was mentioned in
an article about American volunteers assisting Kosovo refugees
in the May 24 issue of the New York Times. He
said "a Jesuit philosophy 'to do for others' brought him
to Macedonia."
- The 1999 Holy Cross Commencement address by John F.
Smith Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of General
Motors, was seen across the nation on C-SPAN during
the Memorial Day weekend.
- In a May 31 New York Times article about
the history of awarding honorary degrees, Rev. John E.
Brooks, S.J., was quoted recalling Joe DiMaggio's emotional
reaction to receiving such an award at Holy Cross.
