Edward
R. Browne, M.D., died Feb. 25, 2003 at Windham Hospital, Willimantic,
Conn., following a six-month battle with cancer, at 81.
Prior to his retirement in 1986, Dr. Browne had served 15 years
as the first emergency department director at Windham Hospital
in Willimantic. He then became the first medical director at St.
Joseph Living Center in Windham, Conn., where he worked for seven
years. Dr. Browne had also been the medical director of Community
Prevention and Addiction Services in Willimantic.
At the start of his career, he served as the chief of surgical
services at Fort Devens Army Hospital. In addition, Dr. Browne
had been the first emergency department director at Johnson Memorial
Hospital in Stafford Springs, Conn.
In 1986, Dr. Browne founded and served as the director of the
Belize Jesuit Mission Medical Assistance Program in Central America,
for which he was honored by the Jesuit Father General in 1991.
In 1993, he received an honorary doctor of science degree from
the College. The St. Joseph Living Center unveiled plans last September
for a grove of trees to be planted in his honor.
Dr. Browne had been a member of several professional organizations,
including the Founders Group of the American College of Emergency
Physicians and the Windham County Medical Association.
During World War II, he served four years in the Army. Volunteering
to return to active duty in 1950, Dr. Browne was a combat surgeon
with M.A.S.H. 8055 in Korea; he received four Campaign Stars during
this service.
A graduate of Tufts University Medical School, Dr. Browne trained
in surgery in Boston and New Orleans.
He is survived by a son; a daughter; a nephew; a niece; and a
grandnephew. His father was the late William E., M.D. 09.
