Women's Lacrosse
The Holy Cross womens lacrosse team began its season
under the direction of first-year head coach Stephanie Pavlick.
Pavlick comes to Holy Cross from Allegheny College, where
she compiled a 10-18 record overall. The Crusaders return
16 players from last years squad that finished fifth
in the Patriot League.
The Crusaders have come on strong as of late, following
an 0-2 start. The team fell to the University of Massachusetts
in the season opener, 10-5, and dropped its second game of
the year at Hofstra by a count of 17-2. The team then winged
westward on a spring break trip to California. The Saders
began the trip with a win over St. Marys College. The
team took a 4-0 lead following a goal by Heather Bryce 03 (Arnold,
Md.) at the 6:17 mark and back-to-back tallies by Jana
Tencati 05 (Southwick, Mass.). Holy Cross would
go up by as much as 7-1 before St. Marys mounted a
comeback. The Gaels tied the game before tri-captain Erin
Rowse 03 (Baltimore, Md.) scored the game-winning
goal with 22 second remaining in the second overtime period,
to lift Holy Cross to a 8-7 victory. The close games continued
into the second and final game in California against University
of California at Davis. In another double-overtime game,
Bryce scored the game-tying goal with 96 seconds remaining
in the second overtime, then assisted on a winning score
by Carolyn Smirti 06 (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) just
25 seconds later to lift Holy Cross to an 11-10 victory. Katie
Britt 04 (Winchester, Mass.) led the attack with
a game-high five goals, all in the first half. Tri-captain Kellaigh
Malangone 03 (Lake Grove, N.Y.) was solid in net
for both games, making 15 and eight saves respectively.
Upon returning from the west coast, the team encountered
colder temperatures, but remained hot, winning three of their
next four games, including wins over Marist, Sacred Heart
and Villanova. In the Villanova game, the team scored six
goals in the final 16:36 of the contest to rally from a four-goal
deficit to defeat the Wildcats, 10-9. As it heads into the
stretch run of its season, the womens lacrosse team
is hoping to continue their success from the first eight
games.
