Joseph F. Gibbons, M.D.,
died on Feb. 8, 1999, at his home in Ashby, Mass. Dr. Gibbons,
who was 101 at the time of his
death, had been the last remaining member of the Class of
1919 and possibly the oldest living Holy Cross graduate.
He had also
held the Boston Post Gold Headed Cane as Ashby's oldest citizen.
A family physician, general surgeon and obstetrician, Dr. Gibbons had maintained
a practice for 53 years in Roslindale and West Roxbury, Mass., retiring in 1980.
A past president of the medical staff at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain,
he had been affiliated with five Boston-area hospitals; a medical center in West
Roxbury is named for him.
A graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine in 1924, Dr. Gibbons received
his obstetrical training at Providence (R.I.) Living-In Hospital. He was a veteran
of the Army,
serving as a first lieutenant in the medical corps.
Dr. Gibbons is survived by four sons; three daughters; two sisters; 25 grandchildren;
19 great-grandchildren;
and nephews and nieces.
Rev. Charles J. Dunn, S.J., of the development office, attended the funeral
services for Dr. Gibbons which were held in Clinton,
Mass., with burial in St. John's Cemetery in Lancaster.
