In
Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital, at 73. Prior to his retirement
in 1988, Mr. Hopper had worked many years for the General
Foods Corp., most recently serving as the corporate director
of scientific affairs. Former president of both the Institute
of Food Technologists (IFT) and
the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers' Association, he was an active spokesman
for increased global awareness of food safety and technology. Mr. Hopper established
the World Food Prize, a $250,000 annual grant supported by the John Ruan Foundation,
in recognition of worldwide accomplishments in food and agriculture. In addition
to organizing the Food and Drug Administration's Food Safety Council which sets
criteria for judging the safety of food and food ingredients, he also served
as the architect of the International Food Information Council. An adjunct professor
of food science at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., Mr. Hopper was the recipient
of the Carl R. Fellers Award, sponsored by the Phi Tau Sigma Honorary Society
and the IFT to honor scientific leaders for their contributions to the profession
of food science and technology. Mr. Hopper was also a member of New York Gov.
Hugh Carey's Nutrition Watch Committee and chairman of the National Committee
for Nutrition Labeling Education as well as the Committee on Nutrition and Health
of the Boy Scouts of America. A Navy veteran, he served three years in the Pacific
during World War II. Mr. Hopper had been a Holy Cross class agent and a member
of the President's Council. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; two sons, including
John A. '78; two daughters; a daughter-in-law, Lisabeth
A. (Rehm) '81; and seven grandchildren.
