Sylvia Gomes, after winning
the Miss Connecticut Pageant this spring, advanced to the Miss America
Pageant, held on Sept. 18 in Atlantic City, N.J. She was one of the top
10 finalists. Gomes, who is studying art history at Holy Cross, is one
of the Dana Scholars, an honor given to students of outstanding academic ability,
strong character and leadership. Stressing the importance of peer mentoring
in her platform for the pageant, she says that community service has always been
an important part of her life.
