Rev. J. Gregory Gilmartin, M.M., a Maryknoll missionary,
died Aug. 7, 1999 at St. Teresa's Residence, Ossining, N.Y.,
at 79.
Fr. Gilmartin, who served in China and Japan for 46 years, began his work in
Kweilin, South China, in 1950. Soon after his arrival there, he was placed
under house arrest by the Communists for almost 18 months. In 1951, he was
assigned
to the Maryknoll Mission Region in Kyoto, Japan. Fr. Gilmartin spent almost
all of his missionary career in Japan where he served as pastor in the Tanabe
Parish,
Karasaki
Parish and the Suzuka Catholic Church. He was also
on the teaching faculty of Kyoto University for 33 years.
Fr. Gilmartin attended Holy Cross for two years before continuing his studies
at St. Thomas Preparatory Seminary, Bloomfield, Conn., and St. Mary Seminary,
Baltimore, Md. Entering the Maryknoll Novitiate, Bedford, Mass., in 1944, he
was ordained to the priesthood at the Maryknoll Seminary, Ossining, on June 12,
1948. Fr. Gilmartin retired in 1995 and returned to the United States where he
took up residence
at St. Teresa's. He is survived by a sister.
