World-renowned composer Osvaldo Golijov, the College’s Loyola professor of music, gained national media attention this summer in his role as composer in residence for Lincoln Center’s 2007 Mostly Mozart Festival.
Compared to classical music greats Mozart and Beethoven by New York Post reporter Barbara Hoffman, Golijov has earned the praise of critics worldwide for bringing excitement and innovation to this year’s festival. Working with artistic director, Jane Moss, and music director, Louis Langree, Golijov organized a series of concerts for the event—including works by Mozart, his predecessors, contemporaries and related successors. Golijov’s own Azul, described by The New York Times as “mesmerizing,” was performed opening night—with more of his music featured during the last week of the event. On Aug. 18, under Golijov’s auspices, 16 Holy Cross students took part in a special performance of his acclaimed work, St. Mark’s Passion.
Earlier this year, Golijov won two Grammy awards for Ainadamar in the categories of Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Contemporary Composition; the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, he was named Musical America’s 2006 Composer of the Year.
