College Board gains new Trustees

This year, nine new Trustees have joined the Holy Cross Board. They are:

Rev. Ronald Amiot, S.J., is special assistant to the president of Loyola College in Maryland. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in philosophy, theology and psychology at Saint Louis (Mo.) University; his master of arts degree in historical-pastoral theology at the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass.; and his Ph.D. in counseling and human development at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Entering the Society of Jesus in 1967, Fr. Amiot made his final vows in June of 1990. In addition to serving as a lecturer at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., he has been an associate professor in the department of religious studies at Gonzaga University, Spokane, Wash. Formerly the director of student counseling at Fairfield (Conn.) University, Fr. Amiot has held the posts of staff psychologist, therapist, university chaplain and instructor at Creighton University. He had been the president of Campion Health Center, Inc. in Weston, Mass., for eight years, prior to becoming the president of Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine.

Rev. John A. Baldovin, S.J., ’69 is professor of historical and liturgical theology at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. Fr. Baldovin, who entered the Society of Jesus in 1969, was ordained to the priesthood in 1975; he earned his master of divinity degree with distinction at the Weston School of Theology—and a master of arts degree, master of philosophy degree and Ph.D. in theology at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. In 1984, Fr. Baldovin joined the faculty of the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, Berkeley, Calif., as an assistant professor of historical and liturgical theology; during his tenure there, he served as interim dean for one year, director of liturgy, and acting president from 1997-98. Fr. Baldovin has also taught at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y., and, at Fordham University in New York City. A member of the North American Academy of Liturgy and Societas Liturgica, he sits on the advisory board of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). Fr. Baldovin has published widely in the area of Christian liturgical studies.

Michael E. Daniels ’76 is the senior vice president of IBM Global Technology Services, responsible for the company’s business operations around the world in strategic outsourcing, integrated technology services, maintenance and small and medium business services—as well as IBM Global Financing. Daniels, who joined IBM in 1976, has held a number of leadership positions with the corporation—in sales, marketing and services. He has been general manager of product support services, availability services and systems solutions. Before becoming senior vice president for Global Technology Services, Daniels was general manager of IBM’s sales and distribution operations in the United States, Canada and Latin America; prior to that, he led the IBM Global Services team in the Asia Pacific region. Daniels and his wife, Patty (Podolak) ’77, reside in Ridgefield, Conn.; they are the parents of three children, including Kate ’03, and Megan ’04.

David J. Grain ’84 is the founder of Grain Capital LLC, a private equity and venture capital firm that invests primarily in the wireless telecommunications sector; previously, he was president of the real estate investment trust, Global Signal Inc., one of the largest independent wireless communications tower companies in North America. From 1992-2000, Grain was a principal at Morgan Stanley—before becoming senior vice president for AT&T Broadband’s Northeast region. A former trustee of Emerson College in Boston, he has served on the board of directors of Motient Corporation and the board of advisors for TerreStar Global Ltd. Grain and his wife, Lisa C. Butler, D.M.D., reside in Sarasota, Fla., with their two children.
 
Andrew V. Jaico ’07 was an English major at Holy Cross with an emphasis in creative writing—as well as a participant in the premedical studies program. Involved with Asian Students in Action (ASIA), he served for four years on the group’s executive board. As a SPUD volunteer, Jaico had taken part in the Social Justice 101 program, through which he taught social justice lessons to eighth-grade classes in the Worcester community. He resides in Livingston, N.J.

Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., has been the president of Loyola College in Maryland since July 2005; he had previously served as assistant dean and associate professor of religious studies at Holy Cross. Entering the Society of Jesus in 1977, Fr. Linnane was ordained to the priesthood in 1986. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Boston College; a master of arts degree from Georgetown University’s department of government in Washington, D.C.; his licentiate in sacred theology from the Jesuit School of Theology, in 1988, at Berkeley in California; and, in 1994, his Ph.D. from Yale University’s department of religious studies in New Haven, Conn. Currently a trustee of the Caroline Center and the Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care, both in Baltimore, Fr. Linnane is also a member of the NCAA Division I committee on athletics certification.

John J. Mahoney Jr. ’73 is vice chairman and chief financial officer of Staples Inc., the world’s largest office products company. After graduating from Holy Cross, Mahoney earned his master’s degree in business administration degree at Northeastern University in Boston. Beginning a career in accounting at Ernst & Young, he subsequently served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of the advertising agency, Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopolos. In 1986, Mahoney joined Staples and, over the years, served in a variety of positions, including executive vice president and chief administrative officer. He and his wife, Rosemary, reside in Dover, Mass.; they are the parents of three children, including Michael ’00.

Cmdr. Bernadette M. Semple, USN, ’82 is the deputy director of C4 Systems with the Combined Joint Task Force—Horn of Africa. A graduate of the Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., Semple earned her master of arts degree in National Security Affairs (strategic planning and international negotiations) at the Naval PostGraduate School in Monterey, Calif.; in 2003, she received her master of science degree in information resource management from Syracuse (N.Y.) University. Prior to her current position, Semple had served as commanding officer, Naval Communications Security Material System; department head, Naval Media Center; and chief pacific command representative in Guam, among several other posts.

Mary Murphy Westover ’85is the chief financial officer of Symmetric Capital, a private equity firm dedicated to investments in growth companies throughout the United States and Canada. Following graduation from Holy Cross, Westover worked in the Treasurer’s Office at Holy Cross. Earning her master’s degree in business administration at Babson College, Babson Park, Mass., in 1989, Westover worked as a small business consultant at Price Waterhouse. In 1991, she became the chief financial officer of Greylock Management, a venture capital firm located in Waltham, Mass. Westover resides in Boston with her husband, Matt, and their five daughters.
