Academic Works:

Doctoral Dissertation: “Environmental Protection Issue Networks and the Prospects for Sustainable Development.” In this research I evaluated the efforts of international, domestic, and local environmental and human rights non-governmental organizations (NGOs), grass-roots movements and sectors of business, government, and multilateral agencies to protect the human and natural environments in the Brazilian Amazonia. I called these efforts Environmental Protection Issue Networks (EPINs). The dissertation is a comparative study among EPINs’ performances in confronting social and environmental problems originated by development initiatives, namely the World Bank Polonoroeste, Carajas Iron Ore, and Planafloro projects. The study highlights strategies that have succeeded in challenging traditional approaches to development policies.

Masters Thesis (MIT): "The World Bank's Impact on the Environment: The Precedent Setting Case of POLONOROESTE” evaluated the influence of the Multilateral Development Banks’ (MDBs) Campaign on MDBs’ environmental and development policies in the 1980s. The Campaign, organized by international environmental NGOs, used the Polonoroeste project as a paradim of the kind of unsustainable development promoted by international financial agencies in the developing world.

Masters Thesis (IUPERJ, Brazil): "The Catholic Church in Context of Crisis - The Case of Angola" discussed the Catholic Church as an international actor and its role in mediating political conflicts.
