I received my PhD in astrophysics from the University of Colorado. I then did postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, NJ) and the Institute of Astronomy (University of Cambridge, England) before coming to Holy Cross.

My research is in theoretical astrophysics and primarily concerns radiative transfer in astronomical objects. I have worked on modeling the EUV and X-ray spectra of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei, the spectra of compact X-ray sources (including galactic black hole candidates, low-mass X-ray binaries, and X-ray bursters), the light curves and X-ray spectra of supernovae, and the spectra of astrophysical masers (see list of publications). I am a frequent visitor of the IoA X-ray Astronomy Group in Cambridge, England.

I have taught a variety of physics courses at Holy Cross. My special teaching interests include astrophysics, astronomy, and the use of computers in undergraduate education. Some items related to my courses:
