Before entering the Jesuits, William Stempsey graduated from medical school and did his residency in pathology in Boston. As a novice in the New England Province of the Jesuits, he worked with the homeless, served as a hospital chaplain and taught high school in Belize.
During his seminary studies, he served as a hospital chaplain in Chicago and as a member of the ethics committee and the ethics consultation service at a hospital in San Francisco. He was ordained deacon on March 16, 1991 in Berkeley, California, and was ordained a priest on June 20, 1992 in Worcester, Massachusetts.
After ordination to the priesthood, he studied philosophy of medicine and medical ethics at Georgetown University, and joined the College of the Holy Cross in 1996. He serves on several ethics committees in Worcester, and also regularly celebrates liturgies on campus and in a local parish. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the piano (indoors) and fishing (outdoors).
